Brand design for a sessional Kindergarten

Parkdale Preschool’s former brand didn’t reflect who they really are and the uniqueness of the preschool. It needed to be updated to reflect the gentle, nature-based and play-based aspects of the preschool.

The Story

We started with a brand strategy session with the key stakeholders involved in the project (a decision maker from the preschool’s committee along with the senior teacher and admin staff member). The process of ‘branding’ was new to the team and they needed to be nurtured and guided through the process.

The visual identity I developed is based around a whimsical and literal bespoke illustration of a child holding a flower. The styling is soft and uncomplicated and the shapes are rounded, organic and asymmetrical. The character in the illustration is deliberately gender non-specific. The colour palette hints at the grey/blues of the former logo and acknowledges the preschool’s location in a bluestone laneway. The accompanying typeface is childlike, yet uses all standard letterforms and is very easy to read (especially for a child who is learning - it follows the rules with its upper case P for the proper noun Parkdale). It’s an engaging and welcoming design. It implies nature, growth and the wonder of childhood. It’s also a flexible design and the full visual identity includes additional illustrative brand assets and sub brands which represent aspects of the preschool.

Working with community organisations and, in particular, bringing established brands back to life is a challenge I love.

“It was a pleasure working with Blade Creative to rebrand our community kindergarten. Clare was able to expertly guide us through the process by visiting our kindergarten and helping us to identify and articulate our vision for the brand, educating us about what make a good brand, and melding together lots of different ideas and opinions. Clare was very receptive to feedback about initial concepts and we absolutely love the final bespoke logo and suite of brand assets that she created for us. We have also appreciated her readiness to consult with the development of a new website and signage. I would highly recommend the talented Clare for any branding and design project.”
